“Are we crazy?” Garek asked his brother. He’d come so close to having all his fears realized about starting his own branch of the Payne Protection Agency.

Their employees had been hurt and could have died. They could have lost members of their team. Now they were considering adding another one.

Milek let out a shaky breath. “No. It has to be her. She looks exactly like Stacy.”

“Oh God, we have to tell Stacy,” Garek remarked.

“Who is Stacy?” Sylvie asked. “And why are you two talking about me like I’m not here?” Her nephew had run back to his parents, but she’d stayed in the waiting room with Garek…because he had asked to talk to her.

But all he could do now was stare at her.

“Stacy is our sister,” Milek replied.

She nodded. “Okay…what does any of that have to do with me?”

“Because we think you’re our sister, too.”

She chuckled. “I’m Josh’s sister.”

“And yet you look more like us,” Garek said.

“Well, Josh and I had different fathers. He looks like his dad, and I…”

“Look like yours,” Milek said. “Our father.”

“I don’t know,” Sylvie said. “I was really little when he went away, so I don’t remember much about him…except his eyes.” She looked at the two of them then. “My mom didn’t tell me much either except that he was a criminal who went to jail. Even on her deathbed, she wouldn’t tell me his name, just that he died in prison.”

“He was murdered,” Garek said.

“I know that,” she said.

“How?”

“Luther Mills told me that,” she said. “He also knew who my father was. And he mentioned the name to me once, but I was never certain if he was telling the truth or just messing with me.”

“Patek Kozminski was our father,” Milek said. “I think he was yours, too.”

She shrugged. “I don’t think it matters much. He’s dead.”

“It matters to us,” Garek said. “You’re family.”

“Josh is my only family. And Henry…and hopefully Natalie will be soon.”

“We’re family, too,” Milek said.

“But you don’t even know me.”

“We’ll get to know you when you’re working with us.”

“What are you talking about?”

“We’re offering you a job with our branch of the Payne Protection Agency,” Milek said.

She laughed. “That’s like having the fox watch the hen-house, isn’t it?”

“We’ve heard that before,” Garek admitted. “We’re former foxes ourselves. That’s what you are, too, right? You told Josh that you’re not stealing anymore.”

“Not since Luther died,” Sylvie said. “I swear.”

“Yeah, we’ll have to work on that,” Garek teased her. “You do swear a lot. We’ll have to give you some training, too. I hear you’re a lousy shot. But we do need some employees who are actually allowed to carry firearms. Most of ours would violate their parole if they did.”

She laughed. “Okay, I’m beginning to see the family resemblance now. You’re both smart-asses.”

“And so are you,” Garek said. “You’re very smart. Josh told us that you already figured Hannah was involved. And then you were the one who knocked her out. You’ll be an asset to the team, Sylvie.
